There are lot testimonies as to the origin of the ukulele in Hawaii however the most commonly accepted is that it first showed up in Honolulu on August 23, 1879 with Portuguese immigrant Joao Fernandes. He obviously was so happy to have fulfilled the 4 month, 15,000 mile voyage from Portugal that he hopped on to the dock and started out playing his cavaquinho (a four stringed instrument formed like a small guitar). The Hawaiians were so amazed with the speed of his fingers traveling over the fingerboard that they termed it the “ukulele”, which translates to “the leaping flea”.

The Hawaiians were brisk to follow the instrument as their own and the next ten years it had become amongst the most famous musical instrument inside Hawaii. It was so popular that perhaps King David Kalakaua, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, had to learn to play it. The Ruler learned to play along with build his own ukuleles because of Augusto Dias, one of many initial ukulele luthiers in Hawaii.

The global recognition of the ukulele has gone through a lot of series. It produced its initial major impact on the US mainland on 1915 at the Hawaiian Pavilion along at the Panama – Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The United States citizens fell in love with Hawaiian music and the ukulele. With the 1930s the ukulele incline was more than and it didn’t see a resurgence until finally the 1950s when it was popularized once again by Arthur Godfrey on his TV show “Arthur Godfrey and his Ukulele”. By early 1970s the ukulele had gone off the musical charts and there was just one corporation constructing ukuleles.

However, the next ukulele renaissance is upon us. World wide fascination with this readily played, beautiful little four- stringed instrument has been clambering gradually more than the recent years. It isn’t very difficult to determine to play the ukulele. As a result of its small size, kids generally can learn how to play it and many schools utilize ukuleles in their song programs.

Great LCD for a midsized room. The menu settings and remote take a bit of getting used to, but it is not a deal breaker. The picture is very clear, vibrant with crisp color and black “blacks”. I can hardly tell when I’m watching one of Time Warner Cable’s “regular” or “HD” stations. The aesthetics of the TV itself is very nice. I didn’t think I’d care for the red line around the bezel but it is not so noticeable and won’t clash with your room colors. The line is not bold so it disappears after awhile.

I can’t comment much about viewing this at an angle. I have it in an armoire so it is position only for direct viewing. It looks like it handles angle viewing well when I’m walking by or entering the room.

I’m usually a Panasonic die-hard fan when it comes to TVs. Space requirements forced me to Samsung. However, I am pleasantly surprised and happy with this purchase so far. I have been using this for a couple of months now. The proof will come over time. All of my previous Panny’s were all quality workhorses. As my first Samsung purchase I hope this will be a similar experience.

International real estate investors in search of the next big thing need to look towards Nicaragua. Its western coast is on the edge of a property boom and the region dubbed as the safest place in South America is ripe for investors.

A little known fact is that Nicaragua has one of the strongest economies in Central America and has made significant progress away from the turbulent 1980s. There are virtually no barriers to foreign ownership of property and there are many great deals to be had. Having said that, a buyer should proceed with caution because practices are still underdeveloped.

A buyer may use an agent, who can help negotiate the price and will have a better understanding of the area. Agents fees are negotiable, but typically range from 5-10% of the selling price and are usually paid by the buyer. Also, a local lawyer is a necessity when researching the title.

Property prices are increasing international real estate investors have seen returns upwards of 60% on purchases in key ‘hotspots’ since 2000. Property prices have been rising by an average of 20% per year for the past four years and developments are springing up along the Pacific coast, in historical Granada and the Great Lakes.

Most properties in Nicaragua have reasonably clear titles, but there are some that should be avoided. Properties that were confiscated in the 1980s do not always have a clear title, and those that have agrarian reform titles or supplemental court ordered titles should probably be avoided. Once the buyer has found a property, then the buyer or agent negotiates with the seller. After a price is determined, the buyer places a non-refundable deposit on the property from 5-15% of the selling price. The buyer’s lawyer will then check the title and it is a good idea to have a property inspection and survey done as well. The lawyer will request a Free of Lien document from the Public Registry Office, which will show any impediment to sale as well as the name of the real owner.

If the lawyer verifies the property title, then you can proceed to closing on the property. A new title, or Escritura, will be drawn up with the owner as the new title holder. The seller signs the deed and the final payment is made, often in cash. After this, the buyer’s lawyer will register the property in the new owner’s name. Upon registering the property there is a .5% registration fee and 4% transfer tax due. Once the property is registered then the new owner is the official title holder.

Foreign investment Law 344 assures that foreign and domestic investment receives the same treatment. The law eliminates restrictions on the way in which foreign capital can enter the country and recognizes the investor’s right to own property and establish business enterprises as they wish. 100% foreign ownership is allowed – there is no requirement to have a local partner.

The mix of healthy economy, low house prices and a government bending over backwards to help you invest makes the region a very good place for overseas buyers.

Good news for WestJet fliers. As of October 20, 2010 travelers booking flights from Asia into Canada will be able to connect with WestJet flights on a single ticket. WestJet has partnered with a Hong Kong based airway, Cathay Pacific. WestJet will not be selling direct tickets to Hong Kong.

What Does This Mean For The Airlines?

This is WestJet’s first major ticket-sharing partnership. Cathay Pacific will allow travelers to connect directly to WestJet flights once landing in Toronto or Vancouver (where they already have a hub), under one ticket. It is also expanding to six new Canadian cities: Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Montreal. This is a significant milestone for them since it is the first successful international ticket arrangement.

This will also bring more travelers to Vancouver, simply because more people will be coming through their airport. Many will be passing through to other destinations but some will stay in Vancouver, which will be great for the tourism in the city.

Where Else Will WestJet Be Going?

Since WestJet is a Calgary based carrier, it will be most beneficial to the company if they can get a successful partnership with a company based out of the US. Most of the fliers that WestJet attracts are North American. They still plan on expanding through partnerships with more global carriers.

The vision at WestJet is: “…to become one of the five most successful international airlines in the world.” There has been talk of partnering with other airlines (Southwest Airlines) which have been called off. They are still determined to reach their goal and partner up with more international airlines. WestJet is planning for a similar partnership with Air France and has been discussing also with British Airways and Delta Air Lines.

Why Has It Taken So Long?

One of the delays they have encountered is with their reservation system. They needed to implement a new system which could handle the complex coding of the new arrangements. This has caused two years of headaches for the airways, but now that they have it in place hopefully new partnerships will be made quickly and effortlessly.

What Does This Mean For Travelers?

This partnership will most strongly affect North American travelers. Having the option to use a local airline will make international travel (Asia for now) will simplify the process of traveling. WestJet pioneered discount airfares in North America, and hopefully they can do the same internationally. As WestJet branches out and creates new partnerships with other international airlines it will also increase tourism to international destinations. North Americans will be more likely to travel to foreign destinations if they know and trust the airline they are traveling with.

Although most of the Gamefishing my clients enjoy aboard Bite Me is light to medium tackle, I occasionally get the opportunity to break out the bent butt 80s and go after marlin. Every encounter with these monsters is a learning experience. We have learnt a few things along the way and for what its worth, I will be posting a few examples, here is #3. You can learn from them, or laugh at them. I recommend both.

12.15pm Kadavu Trench

Trolling a 4kg Skipjack tuna skip bait rigged with a 14/0 Owner Super Mutu Circle hook. The hook was rigged to sit 4 inches ahead of the tuna’s nose and connected with waxed rigging thread. 9 feet of 400lb Ande leader, 19ft of wind on leader to a Melton bent butt & Penn International STW 80.

A nice blue marlin sidles up alongside the bait and engulfs it leaving a large hole in the wake and a big flash of silver flank as she turns. Skipper yells “big marlin” and angler comes charging out of the saloon to drop the bait back and allow the blue to swallow.

After 15 seconds the skipper calls for the drag to be eased up. Road loads up and the fish is hooked. The blue doesn’t jump at all. She peels off line but at a steady pace and sounds out and down to about 100m. One hour and fifteen minutes later we bully her up behind the boat. A couple of head thrashes and she comes in quietly. Upside down quietly. Now we are all worried. We ease her alongside the boat, pop the Billfish Foundation tag in and find that we can’t see the hook. She’s gut hooked and the damage is obvious. We cut the leader inside the mouth and start towing her behind the boat. A disposable gaff with the tip stoppered with a cork is used to hold her upright. Sadly she does not recover. She weighs in at 420lbs and is donated to two local village schools to feed the kids.

What went right ?

We went to the right place.

We used the right technique to raise and hook up a blue on a circle hook.

We used a fairly heavy drag setting to bring the fish to the boat sooner rather than later.

We tried to revive the fish for some considerable time, even though the signs were bad.

What went wrong

The Owner Super Mutu hook is a KIRBED circle hook. The rig used was not one of ours. It must have been left on the boat by a previous angler and in the busy period of bait catching, my deckie grabbed the first ready rig in the box and quickly rigged up a skipjack to get a bait out there fast.

I didn’t check the rig.

“In my humble opinion”

Never use a kirbed circle hook for marlin fishing. It will gut hook just as well as a J hook and to make matters worse, you just dropped it back ensuring you gut hook. You will almost certainly kill the marlin.

Check everything twice before you set a line. Even if you are in a hurry. It just might save you from a bad day.
